Today’s topic is great and diverse food of Johor, and its countless restaurants where you can explore the beauty and vibrance of this province.

There are thousands of restaurants in Johor and countless possibilities on the street, where street sellers offer you variety of choices to taste. In this article, I’ll guide you through the best food in Johor, and where to eat it. There are three sections of food specialties: rice, noodle, and special dishes for you here.

After a few foodie roadtrips down to Johor Bahru, we’ve personally picked out seven local dishes you should try at least once when visiting the area.


There are a few elements of E-Tourism that we like to share with you. As we know in tourism and hospitality sector we got a thousand apps to get all the information about accommodation, foods and others. By that, during this trip we are used several type of application to find information and location such as; Instagram, Facebook, blog, Waze , and Google maps. This applications really helps user to find want they looking for within minutes and helps people to promote their products.

During this trip, transportation we used was a van owned by our classmates. Furthermore, he also became out tour guide because he is native of Johor. Tour guide also one of tourism elements. Tour guide mean; person who provide assistance, information on cultural, historical and contemporary heritage to people on organized tours.

The "Kari Kambing 40 Hari" restaurant located parallel to the North-South Expressway is attracting diners in droves. It is especially popular with motorist taking the old Yong Peng-Ayer Hitam road. The restaurant's location is and added advantage as motorists driving by cannot miss the huge signboard. According to the proprietor Anuar Abdul Aziz, 43, the number 40 is significant in Islam. "Most of the prophets would face trials and tribulations for a period of 40 days," he said in explaining the name of the eatery, loosely translated as 40-day old mutton curry. It serves Eastern rice dishes and even attracts customers from other states as well as Singapore.



Calling out for lamb lover out there, hunt down to Restoran Kari Kambing 40, definitely a must-go placeto eat if you're in town. The taste and fragrant of curry would get you the feeling of stumble upon a hidden treasure. There's also a chicken curry and other side dishes option that you can choose from to eat with mandy rice. The allure of their curry would just make you go gaga and trust us, you'll find it difficult to limit yourself to eat just one round of plate.

Nasi Briyani (biryani or beriani) is a wholesome rice-based dish prepared with spices, rice (eg basmati) and meat, fish, eggs and vegetable. The popularity of this ecotic dish is attributed to its aromatic flavors and distinctively rich taste. In Malaysia and Singapore, the dish is called nasi beriani, nasi biryani and even nasi minyak. The main ingredients of "nasi briyani" include spices and condiments such as ghee, nutmeg, mace, cumin, pepper, cloves, cardamon, cinnamon, bat leaves, coriander, mint leaves, ginger, onions and garlic.


Restoran BP (Batu Pahat) Bariani Power is a well-known Indian Muslim restaurant that focuses predominantly on briyani rice dishes. This restaurant gas gained quite a reputation for serving some of the best Nasi Beriani Gam Johor around for many years, which is a favourite in Batu Pahat. With the help of loyal regulars tat frequent the restaurant, the restaurant has been able to expand outside of the state of Johor, with another outlet located in Melaka. 


As far as the briyani rice here is concerned, the other style of briyani ricebeside the bariani gam is the original preparation, which can be enjoyed with either ayam masak merah, mutton, and beef; all in a smaller fashion to that of the more well-known bariani gam.

The plates of briyani rice can be enjoyed with a number of side dishes that go beyond a serving of dhal curry, chicken curry and mutton curry. Some of these spicy fried chicken, spicy fruit pickles, and tea infused eggs.

Mee racun is very harmful, deadly and inimical name as it may sound but the flavour of it would just make you fall in love and passion to call for another bowl. A dish that can be found only at Batu Pahat, mee racun (poison noodle) basically a famous and recognized noodle in a spicy tomato-based gravy, tofu, eggs and it comes with sweet and fatty gear box bones and meat that believed to be mee racun tulang specialty. Mee racun is also the identity of Batu Pahat itself. At Restaurant Mee Racun Tulang have regular mee racun (beef) and special mee racun (gear box).

As simple as it is, it’s apparently become a favourite noodle not only for locals, but also a visitor from aother town an tourist from other countries. Don’t be fooled by the name through, this is definitely the only poison and dangerous that your parents never warned you about.

Asam pedas is one dish similar with Melaka as well as Johor. Asam pedas literally means hot or spicy and sour. For your  information, even Melaka and Johor has similar asam pedas but there are a different in raw material used. Asam pedas in Johor basically a dish of fish while asam pedas in Melaka is a dish of beef. The fish the one use to make this dish is ikan tenggiri (spanish mackarel) and ikan pari (stingary).  Basic ingredients are dried chillies, shallots, garlic, belacan (prawn paste), daun kesum (vietnamese mint), bunga kantan (torch gnger flower) and tamarind juice. 


At Asam Pedas Pak Yahya, the basic ingredients used are chili, ginger, turmeric, onion and garlic only, in contrast to other asam pedas dishes that add shrimp, shrimp or orange radish into their cooking. Besides that, Pak Yahya only used local fish purchased directly from fishermen around Leka Beach, Parit Jawa only such as red fish, spanish mackarel, mackerel and seabass.

Mi Bandung or Mee Bandung is a famous traditional cuisine and food from Muar, Johor, Malaysia. The word 'bandung' in its name stems from the meaning of the word which means 'double' or 'twin' or 'paired' where something is coupled or mixed with something else. This means that Mee Bandung is a cuisine that contains ingredients combined from various spices. Formerly Mee Bandung is a pair of noodles and eggs coupled with a mixture of chilli and onion with spice, but now added with other ingredients such as shrimp, meat, fish gravy and vegetables.

For your information, every people came to Muar they want to try this dishes. The uniqueness of this food is its broth using shrimp stew water, it makes it very strong and delicious to eat when it is hot when it is served. For the people of Johor, the history of mee noodles in Muar is a recipe for their pride that was founded by Abu Bakar Hanafiah's family trader for hundreds of years. The delicious mee noodles of Muar are located in the dried shrimp, meat, peanuts and many other ingredients. It provides spicy, sweet, fatty, salty flavor with the aroma that brings the taste to its fans.

Its founder, Mr. Kiar Am Sai has made his coffee a popular drink among the locals, with his signatured product “Kopi Cap 434” remains a favorite brew among coffee lovers, both local and abroad. Sai Kee Coffee is one of popular places in Muar, Johor because they are serve the best coffee in the town. As we know Malaysian coffee (kopi-o) is special in color, flavour and taste because of its special roasting technique and recipe that includes margarine and sugar as ingridients.

Kacang pool is adapted from the Middle Eastern dish of foul medammas. Haji Makpol Kairun founder of “Kacang Pool Haji” has introduced the dish to Johoreans 28 years ago and he now has five outlets around the state and one in Putrajaya.

The main ingredients are beans with herbs and spices and he had modify the (dish) in Middle Eastern countries to suit Malaysians’ taste buds because it is quite bland. Another difference between kacang pool and foul medammas is minced meat, which he uses as an ingredient because many Malay­sians like meat in their diet.




The main ingredients in kacang pool are broad beans, fried eggs, minced meat and red onions, with toasted bread for dipping. A bowl of kacang pool at Makpol’s outlets costs RM6. This kacang pool is suitable for serving as a menu during breakfast or hi-tea because it is not too heavy and not too light. Haji is pleased that fans of his food now have a choice of kacang pool stewed in beef or lamb that is only available at this outlet. Besides that, we can found other traditional food such as Lontong basah (RM5.00), Mee Rebus (RM5.00) and Soto (RM6.00) at Restaurant Kacang Pool Haji.
